Utilizing AI to create a gym system and an app for the gym's consumers

AI tools to enhance the process

The challange

A coach who owns a gym in the U.S. developed a very comprehensive (and complex) method for generating workout plans, based on health information, a score from movement analysis, and several other parameters from each of his clients.

However, all of these parameters and the results of this equation were managed across multiple Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. This made the tool very difficult to use and, more importantly, made it also difficult to pass on the knowledge so that other coaches could also apply it when creating their own training plans.

In this scenario, it was necessary to migrate this logic to a web system, thus simplifying the use of the method for both the owner and his staff.

And, in addition, the gym's clients didn't have a digital way to track their workouts and individual exercises, which made it necessary to also develop a mobile app for this purpose.

The strategy

The development context involved negotiations with potential investors and therefore required quick changes and adaptations. With that in mind, we used the AI tool Lovable to develop the web system, as well as the Bolt tool to build the mobile app.

The process

Rethinking the design process by adding AI tools to the workflow was an important learning experience in how to achieve greater speed in planning and executing tasks, without losing quality and while ensuring good usability and business rules that aligned with the needs of both users and investors.

I created mid-fidelity prototypes to map out the user journey and, from there, used prompts to generate each part of the system in Lovable. The app screens, on the other hand, were generated in Bolt, refined in Figma when needed, and then updated back in Bolt.

Also, with the help of AI, I was able to create functional prototypes and make quick adjustments, which made it easier to conduct usability testing sessions with the other coaches at the gym, and then immediately implement the necessary iterations to the product.

The UX deliveries

Beyond the coach-focused workflow system and the member-facing app, our deliverables also included the usability test plan and key findings.
